Interview with Laura Baudler (Marketing and Pricing Coordinator at Metabo) and Carlos Peña (Head of the Industrial Department)

Advanced Manufacturing Madrid – What motivated you to start developing the Cordless Alliance System (CAS)?

Metabo Tools – The main motivation, since the idea of an alliance between tool manufacturers from different sectors was first conceived, was to be able to cover the needs of the largest number of professional applications with the same battery, ultimately achieving cordless work and wireless freedom.

Just as the cables of any machine from different manufacturers can be plugged into the same outlet and the same power supply, we at Metabo want to make cordless work universal, that is, allow the use of machines from different manufacturers with a single interface.

AMM – Can you tell us about the product development process? Any anecdotes or obstacles that stood in your way?

Metabo Tools – All project processes and development are carried out from headquarters in Germany, and they are the only ones who can tell us how difficult it is to bring such a revolutionary and ambitious idea to fruition in this sector, finding committed manufacturers who believe in the project, and getting them to agree on the need for a unique battery system, with the firm belief that they were making the best decision for the future.

AMM – What is the technology behind this innovation?

Metabo Tools – With more than 30 years of experience in the development of cordless tools, Metabo has become a pioneer in CAS battery technology and the motto “cordless construction.”

Since 2009, Metabo batteries of all generations have been 100% compatible with all machines and chargers in their voltage class. This will continue to be the case in the future.

As the only manufacturer worldwide, Metabo offers the entire range of equivalent cordless machines with power outputs up to 3,200 watts thanks to LiHD technology.

The high-performance, high-capacity cells of Metabo LiHD batteries provide sufficient power to perform the most demanding cordless applications.

The CAS (Cordless Alliance System) uses the Metabo LiHD system. This means that 35 CAS partners currently use the same battery system and their machines are therefore 100% compatible.

The focus is on the 18V battery, which is still the most important application area for professionals.

AMM – What are the main advantages of this innovative product? What needs does it meet, and how can it improve the lives of businesses?

Metabo Tools – Thanks to the multifunctionality of existing batteries, you will achieve clear cost advantages. Furthermore, the CAS offers the highest level of reliability and high investment security in a future-proof battery system.

Professionals who rely on CAS benefit from:

Money savings
Time savings
More flexibility and less burden on the job site
And they also contribute to protecting the environment by reducing the consumption of natural resources used to manufacture batteries on the market.

Metabo Tools CAS

AMM – Which industries is the innovation primarily aimed at?

Metabo Tools – In fact, it is aimed at all types of industries and sectors. CAS is an established battery system that allows for a wide variety of standard and special applications in different areas (metal, wood, building materials, etc.)

AMM – What are the main obstacles faced by a company that wants to develop an innovative product?

Metabo Tools – The main obstacle is that the idea truly offers something different that can change the current state of the industry and serve as the foundation for the future.
