Since the beginning of 2020, all 58 FUCHS subsidiaries have been CO2-neutral, taking into account energy consumption in production, administration, and research processes, as well as energy-related emissions from previous steps in the production chain (business travel, hotel stays, and employee commutes). The company’s waste generation and wastewater are also taken into account.
Since January 1, 2020, the FUCHS Group has been committed to the environment by offsetting and improving its CO2 emissions through investment in climate protection projects and the promotion of renewable energy. This new carbon-neutral strategy is part of the sustainable development plan that FUCHS approved in 2010, which has resulted in a reduction of approximately 30% in specific CO2 emissions from energy consumption per ton of lubricant. This development plan is accredited, approved, and monitored in accordance with certification standards and the 17 sustainable development goals internationally recognized by the United Nations. The validation of the results of this strategy is also verified by independent organizations such as TÜV. Stefan Fuchs, Chairman of the Executive Board of the group, stated: “We are taking responsibility for global climate protection (…) by making an important contribution to achieving the goals agreed upon in the climate protection agreement ratified by the UN in Paris in 2015.” He also noted that “when selecting projects, our focus is on climate protection projects that support economic, ecological, and social development in regions with FUCHS subsidiaries. In this way, we fulfill the company’s corporate social responsibility (…) and the goal of limiting global warming to well below two degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels.” “The company’s CO2 offset projects support, not replace, ongoing efforts to reduce avoidable CO2 emissions worldwide,” added Apu Gosalia, Chief Sustainability Officer and Global Vice President Intelligence. The FUCHS Group aims to gradually reduce its carbon offset payments and increase its share of renewable energy supplies in the medium term, while continuing to invest in improving the energy efficiency of its locations. In the long term, the company also aims to sell carbon-neutral products to its customers, which requires FUCHS to receive carbon-neutral or low-carbon raw materials from its suppliers in the future. To this end, it will exert its influence on the rest of the value chain, encouraging its suppliers to use more sustainable and innovative products.
FUCHS has also joined the “Alliance for Development and Climate” of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) as an official promoter. The members of this alliance, which combines climate protection and sustainable development, strive for climate neutrality by avoiding, reducing, and offsetting CO2 emissions.
