WD-40® was invented more than 70 years ago by three employees of the Rocket Chemical Company. The company’s name originated from WD (Water Displacer) and 40, as NASA approved the formula on the 40th attempt. Its creators were looking for a way to develop a range of degreasers and products that would prevent corrosion. The original objective was to use it in the aerospace industry to displace water and protect the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion. Over time, company employees began taking the product home and discovered many additional everyday uses. This led Larsen to introduce WD-40® Multi-Use Product in easy-to-use aerosol cans.
