Iberdrola and Danone Spain join forces to promote the creation of the largest photovoltaic plant in Spain.
Through a long-term purchase agreement (PPA) for 100% renewable electricity from the Francisco Pizarro photovoltaic plant that the energy company is building in Extremadura
- With an installed capacity of 590 MW and an investment of €300 million, Francisco Pizarro will prevent the emission of more than 245,000 tons of CO2 per year and contribute to the country’s ecological transition. Danone Spain’s suppliers, Graham Packaging and Salvesen Logística, have also joined the agreement. The alliance strengthens Iberdrola’s renewable energy project development strategy in Spain through bilateral contracts, which promote a supply of energy at competitive and stable prices to large customers committed to sustainable consumption. The agreement reinforces Danone’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, as all the renewable electricity the company uses in its plants and factories will come from this agreement. Iberdrola and Danone have joined forces in their sustainability commitments with the signing of a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), which will drive the development of Europe’s largest photovoltaic plant. The initiative consolidates Danone’s long-term renewable strategy and enables 100% of the renewable electricity already used in its plants and factories to come from this solar project. The agreement will guarantee the long-term supply of green electricity to all Danone production plants and sources in Spain, located in Asturias, Barcelona, Girona, Guadalajara, Granada, Madrid, and Valencia, as well as to its logistics centers and offices. Danone’s suppliers, Graham Packaging and Salvesen Logística, have joined this alliance. The agreement between the two companies establishes that Iberdrola will supply clean energy to Danone’s 29 supply points in Spain for a period of 10 years, starting in April 2022. The volume of energy supplied under this PPA will reach 73 GWh/year. Danone will supplement its consumption with another annual green energy contract with Iberdrola, reaching 104 GWh/year. The 100% renewable electricity supplied will come from the Francisco Pizarro project—the largest photovoltaic plant currently planned in Europe, with a capacity of 590 MW—which Iberdrola is building between the Extremadura municipalities of Torrecillas de la Tiesa and Aldeacentenera, in Cáceres. Operational in 2022, it will prevent the emission of more than 245,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere annually, strengthening the competitiveness of this technology for environmental protection and mitigating global warming. Its construction will contribute to job creation—more than 1,200 professionals are expected to be involved at peak times—and to boost the community’s industrial fabric. The project represents an investment of more than €300 million. Francisco Pizarro is part of Iberdrola’s ambitious investment strategy in renewable energy generation projects in Spain, as well as its commitment to bilateral contracts as a way to promote the supply of energy at competitive and stable prices among large customers committed to sustainable consumption. “Through PPAs, many opportunities are opening up for the development of renewable projects that are transforming the present and future energy sector in our country and contributing to economic recovery. Long-term power purchase agreements provide stability for investments and have become an optimal tool for managing the electricity supply of large consumers committed to clean and sustainable consumption. These agreements demonstrate the competitiveness of renewables and their ability to supply energy at affordable and stable prices,” explains Ángeles Santamaría, CEO of Iberdrola Spain. For Danone, the health of people and the planet are closely linked, and this is reflected in its “One Planet. One Health” vision. “We aspire to move toward a new way of doing business that takes into account not only the bottom line but also the economic and social impact of our activity,” says Paolo Tafuri, CEO of Danone Iberia. “This initiative will help us achieve our ambitious environmental commitments, goals that are part of our global strategy and affect our entire value chain,” he concludes. Renewables for a Green Recovery Iberdrola has extensive experience in PPAs worldwide and manages long-term power purchase agreements in markets such as Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Mexico, and Australia, for wind and photovoltaic projects of more than 6,500 MW. In Spain, the company has pioneered this approach with companies in various sectors: banking, telecommunications, the brewing sector, distribution, sports brands, and pharmaceuticals.
