How to work and ensure our own safety during the metal cutting process and the 3 key points to keep in mind
For Klingspor, workplace safety is a priority. We are therefore proud to be a founding member of the OSA (Organization for Safety in Abrasives) and a member of the FEPA (Federation of European Abrasive Manufacturers). Our safety standards in the manufacture of our products go beyond those required by the various EN standards for abrasive safety.
One of the key points to keep in mind when cutting metal is, without a doubt, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Without the proper equipment, we shouldn’t begin our work.
Eye protection (goggles) or face protection (shield)
Respiratory protection mask
Gloves
Hearing protection
Another important point is the proper securing of the workpiece. This can prevent breakage of the cutting discs, the material being cut, and serious injuries to our own bodies. Ideally, we should secure the workpiece as close as possible to the area where we will be cutting, thus also avoiding vibrations in the material.
Any movement of the workpiece can cause breakage of the disc or a workplace accident.
The third point we must not forget is the machinery itself, which we are using to carry out our work. This is not only to get the most out of our cutting discs, but also to avoid workplace accidents.
Although our work routine sometimes “requires” it, we should never use a cutting disc for grinding. The former are not designed to withstand the lateral pressure required for grinding work.
Always check the maximum allowable speed indicated on the disc and compare it with the speed provided by the machine.
Ensure that the machine is unplugged when securing the disc.
The machine must always have its own protective equipment. Never operate without it.
