PFERD: Safety in the use of cutting and grinding discs

Improperly used abrasive discs can be dangerous, as they can cause operator injury due to contact or breakage. Therefore, it is very important to follow the disc and machine manufacturer’s instructions.

PFERD, as a founding member of the Organization for Abrasive Tool Safety (OSA), has voluntarily committed to manufacturing quality tools that meet the highest safety standards. OSA member companies guarantee constant monitoring of both the safety and quality of their products.

Important tips to keep in mind when using discs:

It is important to examine all discs before mounting them to detect possible damage or defects. Never use machines in poor condition or with defective parts.
Avoid accidental machine start-up during assembly or changing the abrasive. Never force the abrasive product into place or rework it for adjustment.
Only use abrasive products that comply with the highest safety standards. They must bear the corresponding European Safety Standard “EN” number and/or the “oSa” mark.
Follow the warnings and other recommendations that appear on the products, both regarding the use of PPE and in advice on use, assembly, etc.
Never use an abrasive product that has expired.
After mounting an abrasive product and before starting work, keep the machine running without load, with the guards in place, for at least 30 seconds, keeping yourself away from the machine. Never start the machine if the workpiece is in contact with the abrasive product.
Ensure that the workpiece is correctly positioned and secured, and check that the workpiece supports are correctly positioned and in good condition.
Never exceed the maximum working speed.
When working, do not apply excessive pressure, impact the abrasive product, or overheat it.
Never remove the guards from the machines and ensure they are in good condition and in the correct position. A closed protective guard must be used for cutting, and an open protective guard must be used for grinding.
Once the machine has stopped, allow the abrasive product to come to a standstill without resting it on any surface.
